How many times have you had to ask your child to brush their teeth before they actually do? Do you often find yourself scolding your child for losing things at schools? We’re aware that regardless of how calm and composed you are as a person, by the time your child leaves for school, you end up alerting the neighbours with your screams and scoldings.

If you too, like most parents, are concerned about your child’s unorganized nature, don’t fret. It’s absolutely normal at this stage however, attempts to correct their behaviour should begin early in life so that this doesn’t become a life-long habit.

You might wonder that if you can help your child become organized, that will make things easier for both you and the child. However, it’s certainly not an easy task. But when has anything with children been easy? With some patience, a little faith and some tips, you can make your child more organized.

To your rescue, here are some easy-to-implement tips and practices to make your child more organized.

1. Break complex tasks into simpler steps

The first step to helping your child with organization is to break everything down into manageable tasks. As a parent, you can tell them that every task has a beginning and end, and they just want to make sure they get moving on it! For example, if it’s time to pack up their school outfit for the next day, tell them to tidy up their bag and put in only the necessary books and equipment for the day. Tell them this is something they need to do every single day until they become so familiar with packing up for school that it becomes easy.

2. Have a to-do list

It is essential that children follow a to-do list to ensure that they’re carrying out the important daily activities. You may start off with a basic list which includes tasks like brushing their teeth and bathing. Slowly diversify your kid’s schedule using a checklist for school related tasks including completing assignments, ironing their uniform, etcetera.

On the weekends you can further diversify your child’s to-do list by including activities typically done over the weekend. You may also want to ensure that the lists are visible to your child so that it helps them recognize what needs to be accomplished at any given moment. A simple checklist on whiteboards or blackboards that your child will see each day would do the job.

3. Develop time management skills

Teaching your child time management is just as important as teaching them reading, writing, and arithmetic. Starting this young can help them gain a lot of confidence and self-awareness that they’ll be able to carry with them into adulthood. You can start off by asking your child to write down the most important things that need to be done at school or home for the day. You may then assign an estimated time to each task, check the difference upon completion and adjust it when doing the same for the next day (or time).

4. Help organize their surroundings

If you want your child to focus at school or assignments without distraction, you need to create a study or work space that is free from clutter and distractions. Not just children but even adults need to structure their environment in a way that serves natural cues to help focus better. For example, give him/her a table where he/she can keep their bag, books and stationery. Ensure the table is not used for keeping napkins, water bottles, uniforms or toys. Keep everything clean and organized to avoid confusion.

5. Help your child plan in advance

Most successful people in the world share common attributes like punctuality and time management. This is mostly possible when they plan their days ahead. You too can help your child build a habit of planning their days a night in advance. This helps them to be prepared for the next day with maximum time optimization. This will also allow room for more experimentation and less surprises in an unwanted situation.
